Background
Between 2007 and 2009 the Pathways to Progression Policy Group carried out a number of pieces of work on induction across the Children’s Workforce. They were:
The CWN’s work on induction is referenced in the 2020 Children and Young People’s Workforce Strategy (paragraphs 3.45 and 3.46). The strategy states that the next steps for the CWN are ‘to consult on how the vision and principles can be exemplified in different settings, and how common approaches can be supported across settings’.
The Pathways to Progression Policy group, therefore, is proposing a series of actions in order to meet the expectations set out in the 2020 Strategy. The aim is to ensure that there is a common understanding of induction across both the core and the wider children and young people’s workforce.
The work will help to address the skills needs of the children’s workforce in relation to the Common Core. The project seeks to embed the Common Core into initial training for the workforce both on entry to the children’s workforce or progression within that workforce.
The project will also address the issue of lack of consistency between different induction programmes for the various elements of the children’s workforce. However, the project recognises the need for induction to respond to individual and organisational needs.
